This Submariner is a great and wearable example in very fine condition. The watch features a matte meters first dial in perfect condition that has adopted a warm yellow patina on the hour plots that matches the hands beautifully. The case is still strong all round and has benefitted from a refresh to enhance the factory lines on the lugs. The mid-font insert is in excellent shape, with a tritium lume pip that matches the dial and hands. The bracelet is in good condition with minimal stretch. The watch benefits from a full service by our watchmaker and is ready to go for the summer.
THE FIRST MATTE DIALS
This dial version is the very first matte finish dial that Rolex mounted into the 5513 following the glossy dials. Introduced in around 1966 the term ‘Meters First’ refers to the depth rating having the metric rating first followed by the imperial feet reading second. Rolex moved to stating the imperial rating first in approximately 1969/70 when the first ‘Feet First’ dials appeared. There is a theory that Rolex did this to attempt to increase sales in the USA who continued to use predominantly imperial measurements over metric. This very first execution dial has the original luminous zinc sulfide and Tritium lume which still glows after alll these years. Well documented and rare feature that makes this watch very much in demand as there has been only produced very low numbers.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DOME MAKES
The 5513 is such a characterful watch, in no small part due to the warmth of the plastic crystal; so different to modern sapphire glasses. The way the dial almost dances when the light catches the edge of the plexy – the hour makers distort and change shape and position. Truly magical
