The last run of matte dials that Rolex ran in the non-date 5513 Submariners were known as the Maxi Dials. The Mk1 Maxi is the one hat started it all and is the most desirable of the five variations. The tall, elongated coronet and the fact that the word Submariner (with its ‘z’ shaped S) appears below the depth rating are the key identifiers of the Mk1. The watch is in fantastic condition - the case is still very strong with a nice small bevel on the lugs. The dial is flawless with the oversized hour plots and hands having retained a lovely bright light coloured shade; an effect often seen on Mk1 Maxis. The domed crystal makes the plots almost dance and change shape depending on how the light catches it. The bracelet is a 93150 flip-lock in good usable condition. We have had the watch checked by our watchmaker and we will include a Bulang and Sons strap of your choice in the deal.
THE MK1 MAXI DIAL ROLEX SUBMARINER
The Maxi dials were first introduced in around 1976 and ran for approximately eight years. This example has the first in the series, a Mk1 in flawless condition. One of our favourite features of many Mk1s is the fact that the beautifully large hour markers retain a bright white colour.
THE DOMED T19 PLEXI GLASS
The 5513 is such a characterful watch, in no small part due to the warmth of the plastic crystal; so different to modern sapphire glasses. The way the dial almost dances when the light catches the edge of the plexy – the hour makers distort and change shape and position. Truly magical!
